John Self

John Wayne Self, age 82, of Spruce Pine, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at The Green’s of Spruce Pine.

Born on February 18, 1944 in Mitchell County, he was the son of the late Plato and Lora Sparks Self. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years; Joyce Washburn Self who passed away in 2022. Also preceding him in death was a granddaughter; Reagan Elizabeth Hollifield, his sister; Alice Washburn, and his brothers; Charles, Bobby, Henry, Walter and Jimmy Self.

John was a member of the Hicks Chapel Baptist Church where he served on the Building & Grounds Committee, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and as sound technician. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He loved spending time with his family and was particularly fond of his grandsons that were his pride and joy and spending time with them. He enjoyed working in his garden and helping other people that were in need.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughter; Cindy Hollifield and husband, Myron and his grandsons; Colby and Caden Hollifield.

Funeral services for John Self will be on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 3:00 pm at the Hicks Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Hollifield officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 4, 2026 from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Hicks Chapel Baptist Church. Graveside services will be in the Burnette Cemetery with military honors provided by Sgt. E.L. Randolph D.A.V. Chapter #57.
