John William Letterman, age 43, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Buncombe County.
Born on December 27, 1982, John was the son of Sherry and Micheal Letterman. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kimberly Letterman.
John was a deeply caring and loving person who had a special way of making those around him feel loved and welcomed. To know John was to know someone who cared deeply for his family and friends, and his kind heart left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Above all else, John's daughter, Luna, was his world. She was one of the greatest sources of love and inspiration in his life and one of the reasons he continued to wake up each day and fight so hard. The love he had for Luna was immeasurable, and the bond they shared was truly special. She will forever carry with her the love her father had for her.
John also had a deep love for music, which was an important part of his life and a reflection of his spirit. Music brought him joy, comfort, and connection, and it was something he shared with those around him. John was often described as a light in the darkness—a person whose presence brought warmth and love even during difficult times. His memory will live on through the many lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
Left to cherish John's memory are his mother, Sherry Gay (Mike); his beloved daughter, Luna Letterman; brothers, Chris Letterman, Brandon Gay, Mason Melton, Marshal Melton, and Brantley Melton; sisters, Jennifer Letterman, McKenzie Gay, Amanda Burleson, and Braylee Melton; and numerous nieces and nephews, including his special niece, Emilee Smith.
In keeping with the family's wishes, a celebration of life will be held and announced by the family.
