Josephine Epley

Josephine Banks Epley, age 93, passed away on October 10, 2026, at her residence. She was born on March 30, 1933, in McDowell County and lived a life marked by faith, service, and kindness to others.

Mrs. Epley was a longtime member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the food committee, and a Bible school teacher. Her church was an important part of her life, and she gave generously of her time and care in service to her church and community. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross for more than 26 years, reflecting her steady commitment to helping others. Among the many quiet acts of kindness that defined her life, she enjoyed knitting caps for children and giving them away at all the elementary schools and at the South Mountain orphanage, a gesture that brought warmth and comfort to many.

She will be remembered with love by her family. She is survived by her daughter Sara Worley and her husband, Lester; her son Allen Epley; and her daughter Joanne Sprinkle and her husband, Mike. She is also survived by her brother Frank Banks and his wife, Judy. Her memory will be cherished by her grandchildren Bryan, Chris, Ben, Megan, Lauren, Stephen, Michaela, Jaden, Kristin, and Jessica. Also surviving are 20 great grandchildren.

In addition to those who survive her, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Bryant Epley, and by her son, Ernest Steven Epley.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 1036 Zion Hill Rd, Marion, NC 28752. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Revs. Dr. Tom Walker and Chris Greene officiating.

Josephine Epley will be remembered for her faithful heart, her caring hands, and the many lives she touched through her service, generosity, and love.
