William Jennings "Wig" Deaton

William Jennings “Wig” Deaton, age 91, of Nebo, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at the Charles George VA Medical Center. A native of McDowell County, William was born on June 23, 1930 to the late Arthur and Alma Wilson Deaton.

He is preceded in death by one brother, Carl Deaton.

William was a member of Nebo United Methodist Church and was a proud United States Army combat veteran who served in the Korean War. He formally worked for Clinchfield Mills but later retired from Bost Bakery following thirty years of service. William was an avid fisherman and everyone knew he was the G.O.A.T. of crappie fishing. He also was a North Carolina Tarheel fan. He loved his family greatly, but especially his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of sixty-three years, Dottie Young Deaton; two children, Marianne Deaton and James Eric Deaton (Audrey) and two grandchildren, Nick and Natalee Deaton.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Beam Funeral Service with Reverends Kelly Dotson and Jerry Ruppe officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Wilson-Ballew Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in William’s memory are asked to consider Nebo United Methodist Church, 117 Nebo School Road, Nebo, North Carolina 28761.

Oh my goodness..I had not heard, but want you to know you all are in my prayers. I thought of Wig recently and wondered how he was. He was always a good friend to my Grandpa Earl Finley and I'm sure they are sitting in a boat in heaven pulling them in!! Love and prayers to you all, Vicki Roberts Martin

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Dottie, Marianne, and Jamie in the death of Whig. It was my pleasure to get to know Whig through teaching Jamie at Nebo and working with Dottie. Linda and I have fond memories of being members with Whig and Dottie in the McDowell Dance Club.
