Vera Mae Morgan Washburn, a beloved educator and dedicated member of her community, passed away peacefully in her residence on January 7, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on July 8, 1937, in McDowell County, Vera was known for her nurturing spirit and her unwavering commitment to teaching special needs children throughout her 30-year career as a teacher assistant.
Vera’s heart was deeply rooted in education, and she made a lasting impact on countless lives through her compassionate approach. Her love for teaching was matched only by her passion for life outside of the classroom. She enjoyed trips to the coast and cherished her time traveling on charter bus adventures. An active participant at the Senior Center, Vera and her husband Bob delighted many with their duet performances, sharing their musical talents and joy with the community.
Vera is survived by her loving daughter, Kim Carson (Steve); her special niece, Melissa Myers; her sisters, Alma Poteat and Mary Reed; along with a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob Washburn; her parents, Arthur and Florence Toney Morgan; and her brothers, Ralph Morgan and James Morgan. The loss of Vera leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A visitation will be held on January 14, 2026, from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Beam Funeral Service & Crematory in Marion, North Carolina. A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
Vera Mae Morgan Washburn will be remembered for her loving spirit, her laugh, and her dedication to those she served. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the many memories shared by family and friends.
