Van Ray McKinney, age 67, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 22, 2025, at his home.
Van was born on February 5, 1958, in Mitchell County to the late Ray Dover McKinney and Vonceil Juanita Hughes McKinney.
Van spent over 40 years as a radio broadcaster with WBRM (1250), where his voice became a familiar and comforting presence to many. He was a true sports enthusiast and a devoted supporter of the McDowell Titans, proudly calling their games for four decades. He was a Western Carolina University (Catamount) Alumni.
More than anything, Van loved his family deeply. He was a caring brother, a proud uncle, and had a special bond with his beloved cat, Kimono, who brought him so much joy.
Van is survived by his two sisters, Rita Peterson (Loyd) and Melinda Smith (Rodney); his nephew, Brett Sawyer (Ashlee); his niece, Erika Bradley (Kyle); and his great-nephew, Mason Sawyer.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Beam Celebration Center, with the funeral service beginning at 11:30 AM. Van will be laid to rest afterward at Hughes Cemetery in Avery County.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many listeners who welcomed his voice into their homes for so many years.
