Shirley May Jackson Turner, age 90, was received in the loving arms of the Lord, on Sunday, November 16, 2025.
She was born on July 9, 1935, in McDowell County to the late Esther Brown and James Jackson. Shirley began her Christian journey as a child at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. After years of dedicated service to her church and community, she relocated to Chicago’s South Side in 1979, where she raised her daughter and joined Beacon Light Baptist Church under Reverend Martin. She faithfully served there until 2002, actively participating in various committees and leading the Usher Board as President.
In 2002, Shirley moved to Northern California and became a member of North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church under Pastor Mitchell, continuing her passion for usher ministry and serving as President for many years.
Eventually, life brought her back “home” to Mt. Moriah under Pastor Michael Smith, whom she lovingly called her favorite pastor. Later, she moved to Southern California with her daughter and attended City of Refuge Church under Bishop Noel Jones.
Shirley loved the Lord and lived by the principle of loving people. She was a champion for the underdog and anyone facing hardship. Her life reflected her favorite saying: “If I can help somebody along the way, then my living shall not be in vain.” She believed love was an action word and sought to demonstrate God’s love through service. Shirley will be remembered for her infectious laugh, impeccable sense of style, and the countless moments of love shared with family and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Penny Turner; and her son, Warren Jackson. She leaves behind her cherished daughter, Maxine Turner; one grandson, Wayne; and two great-granddaughters, Doree and Cierra.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 7, 2025, at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Michael Smith will officiate. Interment will follow at McDowell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the Church.
