Shirley Kirby Buchanan

Shirley Kirby Buchanan, age 82, passed away peacefully at her residence on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Born on January 14, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Gid Kirby and Martha Henson Kirby. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth Buchanan.

Shirley was a longtime member of Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as the church custodian for many years. Her faith and her family were very important parts of her life. Shirley especially cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her great joy and many wonderful memories. She was a wonderful cook and took great pride in preparing meals for her family. Shirley was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed creating and working with her hands.

Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Susan Boyd and husband, Eric; three sons, Eugene Buchanan and wife, Dawn, Malcolm Buchanan and wife, Stacy, and Vernon Buchanan; eleven grandchildren, Kristin, Caleb, Courtney, Taylor, Courtney, Tiffani, Trevor, Gunnar, Danica, Deven, and Cheyenne; and three great-grandchildren, Landon, Jayson, and Laurel.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church in Marion, North Carolina. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Rick Wood officiating. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Marion, North Carolina.

Shirley will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
