Mrs. Sarah Wilson, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at Autumn Care of Marion. Born on June 19, 1929, in Yancey County, Sarah lived a life marked by devotion, kindness, and a deep love for her family and community.
She was a proud member of the First Free Will Baptist Church. Sarah had a vibrant spirit and a variety of interests that brought joy to her daily life. An avid reader, she found endless delight in the written word. She also cherished the simple pleasures of accompanying her sister, Barbara Higgins Watson, to yard sales, enjoying the shared moments of discovery. Sports held a special place in her heart, as she was a dedicated fan of the Atlanta Braves and the UNC Tarheels, passionately following their games with enthusiasm.
Sarah's family was her greatest treasure. She is survived by her son, Johnny Banks, and his wife, Paula; her sister, Barbara Higgins Watson, and her husband, Ray; her granddaughter, Christina Burdette, and her husband, John; as well as her great-grandson, Chase Burdette. She also held a special place in her heart for Debbie Wilkerson and Shanna Gorecki, whom she regarded as granddaughters.
Sarah was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Lonnie Dean Phillips and Grace Edwards Higgins. She was also preceded by her first husband, Johnny Banks Sr., her second husband, John Robert Wilson, and her step-father, Jessie Higgins.
Family and friends will gather for visitation on May 26, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the First Free Will Baptist Church of Marion, located at 965 Baldwin Ave, Marion, NC 28752. The funeral service will immediately follow, from 3:00 PM with Reverend Dr. Brian Bird officiating. Interment will be held in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
