I just learned, today, of the passing of my dear Clerk friend, Ruth. Ruth and I became members of the Clerk’s Association along with Georgia Lee Briown of Harnett County and Janice Oldham of Chatham County, being elected female Clerks for the first time in our Counties, having served as Assistant and Deputy Clerks, previously. Ruth was an example that gender was not the prerequisite for being Clerk, but, rather the commitment to service through acquiring knowledge and applying it fairly with compassion according to law. Even after Ruth retired, she continued her studies, adding other degrees to her resume. As a fellow Clerk, she was a Leader, a Mentor and a Friend, sharing her knowledge and experience with other Clerks in our Association. Her contributions to McDowell County, the Clerk’s Association and the Judicial System of North Carolina were significant and I was blessed to have known and served with her through the years.
