Guestbook

My Dear and Sweet Catherine,
Robert was the reason I got to know you. I had known Robert since Sunday School at the First Baptist Church in Marion. We were little then but became big friends. Our Sunday School teacher always took us to Lake James once a month in the summer if we; one, attended Sunday School and two, if we knew our lesson for the week. We were able to swim and fish and be little boys.
Although Robert was younger than I we still kept up with each other through high school.
Our paths parted after high school and we reunited much later at the Western North Carolina State Fair. Same Robert, but the bonus was he had married you and you were always with him.
Catherine, you were so kind to give my wife jewelry you had hand made yourself. Lydia loved it. So thoughtful.
Robert was an instant hit with Lydia and she loved seeing you both each year.
I got too old to be wrestling drunks so I retired from the fair in 2010. But Robert and I, as you know, kept in touch from then on. Whether it be a card or a call from somewhere in the US I had never heard of. He called often to tell me where he was headed and what he was hauling that trip in his truck.
I loved his story about making a delivery in downtown New York City. It went without a hitch.
Or the story about making a delivery to New Orleans after a hurricane.
Interstate Highway was closed and all the road signs were blown down on two lane highways. But he made it there and back. No GPS back then either.
Along the way you raised two wonderful children.
I don't think either of us set out to be friends with each other for life, it just worked out that way. For that, I am a better person and will miss Robert dearly.
I know through watching and being around you both how much you will miss Robert.
Lydia and I can only offer our condolences for your loss.

My heart goes out to Robert's family. There's no place on the road's that Robert didnt know. I never needed a GPS I would just call Robert and he could tell me exactly where I was at and where I needed to stop and eat at. I will miss my dear family friend and trucking buddy!
