Old Fort

Richard "Rick" Price Thornton, 69, of Old Fort, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on October 1, 2024. Born on November 15, 1954, in the mountains of Asheville, NC, Rick was a beloved son of the late Wilburn and Frankie Thornton.

He is survived by his devoted partner, Shirley Greene, and his children: Jackson Thornton and wife Becky; Justin Thornton and wife Andi; and Laurel Thornton and fiancé Seabrook Whaley. He is also lovingly remembered by his brother, Lennie Thornton and wife Cindy; his sister, Kim Thornton Bey and husband Arne; and a circle of lifelong friends who treasured his presence in their lives.

A proud graduate of NC State University, Rick briefly moved to Wilmington, NC, before returning to his beloved Asheville. There, he had a long and fulfilling career as an experienced forester with WNC Pallet Company, dedicating over 25 years to the profession.

Rick’s passion was the outdoors. He was a nature enthusiast at heart, and was frequently found hiking, fishing, camping, or simply marveling at the beauty of wildflowers, wildlife, and the scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Whether capturing landscapes on canvas, enjoying poker nights with friends, or spending time with family at cherished retreats like Edisto Island and Snowbird, Rick’s zest for life was felt by everyone around him.

Known for his unshakable positivity, Rick lived each day with resilience and grace. Together with Shirley, he built a peaceful retreat in Old Fort, finding comfort in the trees and waters that surrounded their home. His love for nature, and for those around him, never waned, continually inspiring everyone fortunate enough to know him.

To know Rick was to experience his boundless kindness, warmth, and joy. His deep faith in God guided him throughout his life, and his gentle spirit left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path. We find solace in knowing he is now walking peacefully in the woods with Jesus, his heart full and his soul at rest.

A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Rick’s remarkable life.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor Rick’s memory by spending time outdoors, and embracing the beauty of nature just as Rick did.
