Pastor Jimmy Upton, 76, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, December 14, 2023 at Frye Regional Medical Center.

A native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, he was born August 21, 1947 to the late James Henry Upton and Ruby Lee Cowart Upton. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Childress.

Pastor Upton devoted his life to the service of our Lord. He helped establish Morning Star Baptist Church in Pacolet, South Carolina. His first pastorate was at Powdermill Baptist Church in Newland. From there, he served as the pastor at Liberty Hill Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, Asbury Baptist Church in Seagrove, Jones Avenue Baptist Church in Easley, and Bethel Baptist Church in Marion where he has been for 34 years. He enjoyed singing in the choir as well.

Aside from his work for the Lord, Pastor Upton was a fan of the UNC Tarheels, the Dallas Cowboys, and wrestling. Fellowshipping with family and friends was also important to him. He enjoyed family meals and golfing with deacons and fellow preachers. His memory will be a blessing to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Miriam Womick Upton; three children, Jon Mark Upton (Nikki), Laura Upton Grindstaff (Jamie), and Rebecca Upton; four grandchildren, Jonathan Upton, Lucas Upton, Madalyn Grindstaff, and Brittani Upton; one great grandchild, Raiden Wilson; two siblings, Carol Upton (Mary) and Barbara Burrell; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 18, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church. Revs. David Burrell, Phil Murdock, Joey Wampler, and Clifford Phillips will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m., two hours prior to the service at the church.
