Mildred Edwards Sumlin, 86, of Nebo, passed away Friday, September 11, 2026, at UNC Health Blue Ridge in Morganton.
Mildred was born in Cairo, West Virginia, on March 8, 1940, to the late Guy Layfield and Annie Williamson Layfield. She was a member of Dysartsville Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing the piano, quilting, and was known for her excellent cooking skills. Mildred will always be remembered as a kind soul. She loved the Lord with all her heart and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her first husband, Marshall Edwards; a son, Marshall K. Edwards; a granddaughter, Amanda Edwards; a daughter in law, Cindy Edwards; two brothers, Henry Layfield and Russell Layfield; and four sisters.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 23 years, Gene Sumlin; two sons, Tim Edwards and James Edwards (Lisa); two step children, Richard Sumlin and Tina Sumlin; a sister, June Layfield; two brothers; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. Burial will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.
