Michael Alan Umberger

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Alan Umberger, on August 3, 2026. Michael was born on October 3, 1972, with a congenital heart defect that he faced with remarkable courage and resilience throughout his life. We were incredibly blessed to have him for 53 years, but his passing came far too suddenly. He is now reunited in heaven with his parents, Jerry and Connie Umberger.

Michael graduated from J.L. Mann High School, attended Clemson University, and later earned his degree from USC Upstate. He made his home in Greenville, South Carolina, with his beloved wife, Jenny Byrd Umberger. Their love for one another was evident to everyone who knew them, and the life they built together was a blessing to witness.

As the youngest of seven siblings, Michael is lovingly remembered by his sister’s, Becky Polok; Kathy (Steve) Butkovich; Karry Beasley; Sandy (Andy) Daughtry; Missy (Stan) Wingard; and brother, Chris (LaDonna) Umberger. He is also survived by his in-laws, Frank and Lois Byrd; sisters-in-law Mindy (Matt) McCown and Robin Carawan and her fiancé Stan Estes; along with 14 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart. To his family, Michael was a devoted husband, cherished brother, beloved uncle, and loyal friend.

To everyone who knew him, he was remembered for his kind heart, unwavering loyalty, and his remarkable ability to make others feel welcomed and valued. Michael embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved spending time with family, cheering on Clemson, listening to great music, preparing incredible meals, and ending the day with a bold glass of red wine. He found joy in the simple moments, and his laughter, generous spirit, and zest for life were contagious. And when his “Grumpy” side occasionally made an appearance, it quickly became another story that brought smiles and laughter to those who loved him.

Although our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that Michael’s faith has made him whole. We pray that God will surround all who loved him with His peace and comfort and that the memories of Michael’s life will continue to bring joy in the years ahead. He will be missed beyond measure, but his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through his kindness, compassion, strength, and love.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 2619 Augusta Street, Greenville, SC 29605. The service will also be livestreamed on the church’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/@StMichaelsELCALiveStream.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
