Maude Fender Lawing

Mrs. Maude Fender Lawing, age 96, of Spruce Pine, formerly of Shelby, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2023 at The Greens of Spruce Pine, surrounded by her loving daughters.

Mrs. Lawing was born April 27, 1927 in McDowell County, NC to the late Garrett Wood Fender and Delia Norman Fender. She was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. After relocating to Spruce Pine, she attended First Presbyterian Church of Spruce Pine. Maude was a hairdresser for 62 years and owned her own business, Village Beauty Shop. She loved flowers of all kinds. She was known as an extremely talented lady, knitting, needlepoint, crocheting and an accomplished seamstress, she could do it all. She was an extremely accomplished porcelain artist which was her passion in life. She loved her grandchildren and extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert "Ab" Norman Lawing; siblings, Dorothy Lockman, Thelma Smith, Max Fender, Paul Fender and Tommy Fender and a son-in-law, Bob Thomas, Jr.

Left behind to cherish Mrs. Lawing's memories are two daughters, Lynn Lawing Thomas and Marisa Lawing Westall; two grandchildren, Mollie Westall and Garrett Thomas; a sister Elva Jenkins (Herbert); a brother-in-law Ray "Red" Lawing, and sisters-in-law, Zelda Curtis, Becky Fender, Marie Fender and Jessie Lawing.

The family will receive friends from 3:30-4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Beam Funeral Service in Marion, NC. A funeral service will follow at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Michael Poulas officiating.  Interment will be held immediately after the service at Harmony Grove Baptist  Church in Nebo, NC.
