Luther Ellis “Eck” Chapman, age 92, of Swannanoa, went home to be with the Lord on the morning of Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Asheville Health Care. A native of McDowell County, North Carolina, born February 22, 1925 and was the last living child of the late Luther and Ethel Davenport Chapman. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jerry Ellis Chapman.
Eck, who was a member of Grassy Branch Baptist Church in Asheville, proudly served as a Deacon at the church. A self-employed painter, he enjoyed going camping, but most of all spending quality time with his grandchildren. A veteran of the United States Army, he served as a surgical technician during WWII.
Left to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 74 years, Elna Ogle Chapman of the home; one son, Tommy Lee Chapman and his wife, Pam of Marion; eight grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Eck’s life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Grassy Branch Baptist Church, Riceville Road, Asheville with Dr. Tom Walker and Rev. Ken Sausedo officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., prior to the service, at the church.
A graveside service will be held in the Chapel of Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Honors will be provided by the United States Army.
