Leonard Richard Hughes

Leonard Richard Hughes, a cherished member of the Marion community, passed away on January 13, 2026, at Mission McDowell Hospital. Born on September 2, 1950, in McDowell County, Leonard lived a life marked by service to both his family and his community.

A devoted member of the New Manna Baptist Church, Leonard served in numerous capacities throughout his life, including maintenance, security, and custodian. His commitment to the church was a testament to his strong faith and dedication to helping others. He took great pride in his work as a correctional officer, from which he retired after many years of devoted service.

Leonard had a passionate interest in working on old cars and enjoyed spending time shooting pool. He was especially fond of attending and cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events, this brought him immense joy. He was also well know for his great sense of humor.

He is survived by his daughters, Tammy Dooley and her husband Eric, Zebreka Hughes Watts, and Tiffany Bailey and her husband Joey. Leonard also leaves behind his brothers, Donald Hughes and Gary Hughes and his wife Connie. He is remembered fondly by his eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom were sources of pride and happiness for him.

Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Bartlett Hughes, and his son, Randy Dalton and his wife Tammy and great granddaughter Macie Welch.

A visitation will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the New Manna Baptist Church, located at 245 E Court St, Marion, NC 28752, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM with Reverend Tony Shirley officiating. Interment will follow the service at Murphy's Chapel Cemetery

His legacy of love and service will undoubtedly continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
