Kimberly Dawn Hayes

     Kimberly Dawn "Kim" Hayes, 55, of Nebo, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

     Born on January 22, 1971.She was a proud graduate of Appalachian State University and devoted 28 years to teaching with Caldwell County Schools before her retirement. Teaching was more than a profession to Kim—it was her calling. She inspired and loved countless students and became a trusted mentor to fellow educators, always willing to share her knowledge, encouragement, and heart.

     Above all else, Kim's greatest joy and proudest accomplishment was her family. She was the devoted mother and best friend of her daughter Kaitlin Alana Bennett, whom she loved beyond measure.

     In recent months, her world became even brighter with the arrival of her precious granddaughter, Emyria Dawn Olson. Kim lovingly spent countless hours helping care for Emyria and teaching Kaitlin how to be a mother. Becoming "Granna" was one of life's greatest blessings, and Emyria brought an indescribable light to her life.

     Kim was the daughter of Glenda Biggerstaff Hayes and Jimmy Ray Hayes and was a loving and devoted daughter who treasured every moment with her parents. She is also survived by her brother, Jason Hayes; her former husband and Kaitlin's father, Martin Edward Bennett; her niece, Haley Jacole Hayes; her nephew, Troy James Hayes; her great niece Oakley Nicole Hayes, her beloved granddog, Amor and many extended family members, treasured friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives were forever changed by knowing her.

     She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Garrison and Margie Viola Biggerstaff. As well as paternal grandparents J.D and Mary Kaylor Hayes.

     To know Kim was to know kindness. She possessed a smile that could light up any room and had the rare gift of making complete strangers feel like lifelong friends within minutes of meeting them. She never hesitated to help someone in need and was known for putting others before herself. Whether offering guidance to a new teacher, supporting a friend through life's darkest moments, or simply listening without judgment, Kim gave freely of her time, compassion, and love.

     Her happiest moments were spent surrounded by those she loved. She cherished family vacations, especially trips to the beach, where the sound of the waves and the feel of the sand brought her peace. Myrtle Beach held a special place in her heart. She also loved traveling, reading, swimming, attending concerts, dropping it low, cheering on her beloved Tar Heels, Braves, and Steelers, listening to all music, and making memories with family and friends.

     Although Kim touched countless lives through her years in education, the legacy she leaves behind reaches far beyond the classroom. She taught by example—showing others how to love unconditionally and live with compassion and patience. Her warmth, grace, and unwavering devotion to those she loved will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.

     Though her time with us was far too short, Kim's love will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, former students, and all whose lives she touched. Her beautiful smile, gentle spirit, and extraordinary heart will never be forgotten.

     A service to celebrate Kim’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. Rev. Doug Worley will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.
