Karen Nanette Martin

In the early morning hours of Monday, December 21, 2020, Karen N. Martin, age 61, of Marion, North Carolina, departed to be with the Lord at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital in Asheville.  The daughter of the late Nathaniel and Ophelia Swepson Martin Owens, she was born in Marion, North Carolina on April 28, 1959.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence M. Martin.

A graduate of McDowell High School, Karen attended UNC-Asheville.  Known as a people person, she would have given her last dime just to be able to help someone in need.  She made many friends along her journey.  A member of Addie’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Karen loved to listen to music.  She will be truly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by a very special companion and friend, Kiffin Rockwell; one brother, Billy Martin (Connie); one sister, Rosa Okeke; a niece that she had a special relationship with, Natasha Martin; Curtis Young, who was like a son to her; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Karen’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service with Pastor Walter Pegues and Pastor Denise Forney officiating.

So sad to hear about the passing of the sister of my long time friend and classmate, Billy Martin. I remember Karen as the rambunctious little girl with pig tails, that I first met on my many visits and sleep overs at the Martin family home in Marion. Actually my first visit to the mountains. She was a lot of fun, with lots of questions, as you would imagine, any pre -teen would have. Always listening and laughing at all antics that Billy, Gus and I was up to. Everything we said was funny, to her. I can remember on several occasions, of her mentioning visiting me in Raleigh sometimes. However, an opportunity, missed on my part, because of time and age. I didn't see Karen as much as I would have liked, as a grown-up, but as stated in her obituary, I'm sure she was all the nice things that were shared by family and friends. Karen will always be in my heart, when I think about those delicious meals prepared by her mother, Ms.Ophelia, and Karen's big smile, an having to be told by her mom, several times, to sit up straight and eat your food. Just a typical mother to daughter, but she took it all in with a smile. Again, very, very sad to hear of Karen's passing, but their is joy on the other side. May she rest in peace and that her memories be a blessing, to all who knew her. Jose'
