Joseph John Lozano MD, 68, of Marion, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday, October 20, 2025.
He was born in Hidalgo County, Texas on February 3, 1957, to the late Salvador Lozano and Antonia Galindo Lozano. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Lozano and Chava Lozano.
Dr. Lozano lived a life full of compassion, integrity, honor, and respect. He grew up in Visalia CA, a farming community, as the fifth child in a family of ten children. In his formative years he was a farm laborer picking cotton, grapes, and other agriculture crops in the summers, and going to school during the academic year. He did well in high school and attended UC Santa Cruz, receiving a BA in Biology and Psychology with a minor in History. He graduated from medical school, specializing in pediatrics and ER medicine, completing his residency in Ohio.
Dr. Lozano then moved to Brevard, N.C. in 2001 to start his own practice working at his clinic for 8 years. Over the course of his career, he worked 5 years as a Hospitalist for different hospitals and 22 years as an ER physician. Since 2016, Dr. Lozano has worked specifically as an ER physician at Native American reservations including Fort Yates, Rosebud Comprehensive, Twelve Clans, and Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System.
Dr. Lozano served four years in the US Marine Corp, where he trained in artillery, forward observer, and was a Marksmanship Instructor in the M-16 Rifle and .45 handguns. He often said the Marines changed his perspective on life and made him a better person. Dr. Lozano was proud of his service and was a patriot of the U.S.A.
The best way to describe Dr. Lozano is as a nurturer and a giver. He always helped his brothers, sisters, in-laws, nephews, nieces, and friends whose lives he touched and improved with his extraordinary kindness and support. He once said that instead of being remembered as someone who was successful in his profession, he wanted his daughter to remember him as a good father who always kept her best interest in mind. Dr. Lozano believed that “she is definitely…my greatest success.”
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Mellyssa Lozano (Marion, NC); his siblings, Blanca Lozano Gonzalez (Visalia, CA), Noé Pablo Lozano (Sunnyvale, CA), Elida Lozano Zarate (Visalia, CA), Ercilia (Sheila) Lozano Rodriguez (Santa Cruz, CA), Salvador Lozano, (Hanford, CA), JuanAntonio Lozano (Reston, VA), Mona Lozano Andrews (Bonifay, FL), and Nina Lozano Sinatra (Sanford, NC); in-laws, nieces, and nephews; great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews.
