Johnny Matthew Wallace, Sr.

Johnny Matthew Wallace, Sr., beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 28, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on August 26, 1941, in Asheville, North Carolina, Johnny was the son of Jensie Alleen Wallace. He had a hard

upbringing but always made the most of every opportunity. He made his home in Marion, North Carolina, where he spent his final years surrounded by the people he loved.

Johnny spent most of his working life in the trucking industry. Outside of work, he found joy in the simple things in life—fishing with the boys, watching old westerns, and enjoying car races.

To those who didn't know him well, Johnny could sometimes come across as gruff. But underneath that tough exterior was a big ol' teddy bear with a heart of gold. He was the kind of man who would have given you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He had a quick wit, loved to keep folks on their toes, and had a way of making people laugh and leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Most of all, Johnny was a man of God. His faith was an important part of who he was, and while his passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled, his family finds comfort in knowing that he is now resting peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior.

Johnny is survived by his daughter, Deborah Wallace; his sons, Johnny Matthew Wallace, Jr., and his wife, Kathy; Lyle Sealey; Richard Wallace, and his partner, Tammy; and Donald “Scooter” McKinney, and his wife, Christina. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Gail Brown.

The family would also like to acknowledge Steve McGalliard for his enduring friendship and the great care he provided to Daddy without hesitation or expectation, especially during this last year. His kindness and friendship mean more than words can express.

Johnny leaves behind ten grandchildren, including one on the way, seventeen great-grandchildren, two nephews, five grandnieces and nephews, and cousins too numerous to mention, all of whom will carry his memory and the stories of his life with them for generations to come.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Emory Wallace and Joseph Carl Brown.

Johnny was a one-of-a-kind man—gruff on the outside, tenderhearted underneath, quick with a joke, generous to those in need, and deeply loved by his family. He will be missed more than words can express, but his family takes comfort in knowing that his journey here is complete and that he is finally home.

Daddy, we love you more than words could ever say. Thank you for the life you gave us, the lessons you taught us, the laughter you shared with us, and for always being our Daddy. We will carry you in our hearts, tell your stories, and keep your memory alive for generations to come. Until we meet again, Toodle-oo Daddy, rest peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior. We love you, and we will miss you every day.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Marion.
