Joann Arrowood Ray

Joann Arrowood Ray, 81, of Marion, departed this life Saturday, February 21, 2026 at UNC Health Blue Ridge.

She was born in McDowell County on April 28, 1944 to the late Hazel Beatrice Arrowood Medford.

Joann loved the Lord and faithfully served Him in all things. She was a talented seamstress, often found sewing or making beautiful quilts. Joann spent much time tending to her garden and then canning the fruit of her labor. Her career was spent in manufacturing, and following retirement, Joann went on numerous fishing trips with her beloved husband in various parts of the United States and Canada. Together, they made lasting memories on these special trips.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her step-father who helped raise her, Carl Medford; two sons, Gregory Edward Ray and Mark Anthony Ray; one brother, Carl Dennis Medford; and one sister, Darlene Bowen.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 66 years, James Edward Ray; two children, Teresa Washburn (Freddy) and Jimmy Ray (Lisa); six grandchildren, Wayne Lewis (Jerrica), Ashely Rhymer (Jackie), Travis Washburn (Sarah), Tyler Ray, Devin Ray (Rachel), and Samuel Ray; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Tommy Medford and Terry Medford (Paula).

In accordance with her wishes, no services are planned.
