James Freddie Powell, 73, of Nebo, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at his residence.
He was born in Burke County on July 18, 1952 to the late James Vernon Powell and Christine Freida Henline Powell. He was also preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Brenda Gallion Powell, and a sister, Joyce Powell.
Freddie worked for many years as a welder, and he served honorably in the National Guard. He was an avid motorcycle and vintage truck enthusiast. Freddie had a special love for his nieces and nephews who he enjoyed teaching to drive tractors and four-wheelers and giving them gas money. He looked forward to a special birthday peanut butter cake each year. He will be deeply missed.
Those left to cherish his memory are his best friend and loving wife of 9 years, Ann Walden Powell; two children, Ted Powell of Hickory and Jennifer Lehmann (Rich) of Los Angeles, California; step-daughter, Renee W. Reitzel; two grandchildren, Dalton Powell and Georgia Lehmann; step-grandchildren, Tyler Reitzel and Callie Reitzel; three brothers, Jeff Powell of Mt. Airy, Andy Powell of Nebo, and Chris Powell (Angee) of Old Fort; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Frankie and Faye Marlowe, Gail Hensley, and Richard Styles; and a number of nieces and nephews. Freddie is also survived by special friends who he considered family, Mary Lowdermilk and Marisa Lowdermilk as well as his canine friend, Nick, who walked by his side daily.
A private service will be held at a later date.
