James Robert “J.R.” Keene, 74, of Marion, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2025, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
J.R. was born in Folkston, Georgia on May 17, 1951, to the late Doris Delane Nettles and James Alvin Keene. He served his country proudly in the United States Army during the era of the Vietnam conflict. Throughout his life, J.R. loved cooking, playing the piano, and harmonica. He was also an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing. Most of all, J.R. took care of his family. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
In addition to his parents, J.R. was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeremiah Keene; three sisters, Elizabeth Manning, Rose McInvale, and Maryann Johnson; and a brother, Andy Vanacor.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 52 years, Elberta “Ann” Keene; two daughters, Janis Riddle and Beverly Chavers; and four grandchildren, Justin Riddle, Ashley Riddle, Gabriel Chavers, and Kyleigh Chavers.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. Rev. Paul Boyd will officiate. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army.
