James "Jim" E. Buchanan, Jr.

On the night of Sunday, October 04, 2020, Mr. James “Jim” E. Buchanan, Jr., age 58, of Nebo, North Carolina, departed to be with the Lord at Mission Hospital McDowell.  The son of Maxine Peters Buchanan of Nebo and the late James E. Buchanan, Sr., he was born in McDowell County, North Carolina on December 27, 1961.

A loving son, brother, uncle and friend, Jim, who always had a sense of humor, was known for his wonderful singing talent and ability to play a piano or organ. While in college he was able to be part of many singing tours.  Known for his generosity, Jim was formally employed at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion where he proudly served as a funeral director and embalmer.  Not only did he have a talent for music, but a talent for floral arrangements, and had assisted many people with weddings and other special occasions.  Jim was a member of Nebo Crossing Church.

Jim is survived by, in addition to his mother, one sister, Teena Melia (Tony); niece, Cammisa Melia; nephew, A.J. Melia; great nephew, Julian Hernandez; great niece, Jasmin Hernandez; great niece, Rosalyn Valentine; and great nephew, Sabastian Valentine.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 07, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service with Rev. Tony Melia officiating.  Interment will follow at McDowell Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Jim was a great man. He helped my mother, Joyce Rose, make her final arrangements before she ever found out that she was sick. She was in her late 70s and didn't want her kids to have to think about it when the time came. She called me and said, "He and I just laughed the whole time. It was fun planning my funeral!" I will never forget that. He passed away on the same day she did, three years later. I know that he was a bright spot for so many grieving folks. That story made me smile when she passed.

Dear, Sweet Maxine,
I am sorry for your loss, but I hope the words of so many who think so highly of you and thought so highly of Jim will ease your sorrow. You taught him well. Such a good job he did with our wedding flowers! I know we've been out of touch, but I have many fond memories of Jim and the family.

Jim handled my mothers services, when he was employed at Kirkseys in Morganton. He was kind, gentle and most of all a consummate professional. Rest in peace.

So saddened to hear of Jim's passing.....I will always remember our days as young Christian teens who would meet in Friday night and knock on doors in our community for Jesus! Jim loved the Lord and people in general! He lit up a room when he entered it.....his shining example of the Love of God will be with us forever....to Maxine ...I love you and thank you for your influence in Jim's life and all of us to whom you have yourself been a shining example of God's wonderful Love! We will see Jim and his Dad again! Dee Parker

Jimmy and I were French Horn Seat mates in the Trojan and Titan bands. He was always grinning, dont think I ever saw him mad. When he set his mind to something he would do it or bust. After several years of not seeing him I saw him again when he went to work for Kirkseys. Same personality , same smile, and well mannered guy I had know as a classmate. Praying God's blessing on his sister and mother. Jan Hemphill Branton

I was so, so to learn of Jim's passing. He was such a solace to me during the passing of my husband several yeares ago. His soft speaking voice and loving smile was a blessing for me from his high school days and his job at the funeral home. He was a special young man, and i know he is sharing that smile and music in heaven now. My thoughts, sympathy and prayers are with the family and friends. May you feel God's comfort as he wraps you in his loving arms during these times of grief.
