Herbert Alexander Jenkins, 92, of Old Fort, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville.
Herbert was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 10, 1930 to the late Walter Ernest Jenkins and Annie Jane Lavender Jenkins. He was married to his wife of 72 years, Elva Fender Jenkins. Herbert served his country proudly in the United States Army. He was a mechanic, fuel truck driver, and a faithful employee to McDowell County Schools for over 30 years. Herbert was known as hard worker and a good provider. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by a daughter, Myra Laney; and a great granddaughter, Kambreaya.
Survivors include his wife, Elva Fender Jenkins; three children, Jane Ellen Robinson, Stephen Alexander Jenkins (Donna), and Melanie Jenkins Dunham (Kevin); nine grandchildren, Mandi Laney, Melanie Vess (DJ), Stephanie Hunt (Ronnie), Kristopher Laney (Lora), Matthew Laney (Whitney), Colton Jenkins & companion, Jennifer, Mikayla Barringer (Jonathan), Anna Greene (Nathan), and Noah Dunham (Ariana); and fourteen great grandchildren, Kaiden, Gabriel, Abriella, Taylor, Tessa, Jaxxon, James, Sebastian, Adisyn, Oaklynn, Adalynn, Harrison “expecting,” Tucker, and Turner.
A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, September 24, 2023, at the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. Rev. Gary Lavender will officiate. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Community Cemetery in Old Fort. Military Honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.
