George H. Thurn of Newland, NC formerly of Melbourne, FL passed away on December 20, 2025 at Cranberry House in Newland. George was born to Gustav and Hazel Thurn on February 8, 1933 in Woodland California.
George graduated from Yuba City High School. After serving in the Navy he attended Cal Poly Tech in San Luis Obispo, CA where he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering. George spent many years working for McDonnell Douglas Corporation. His career eventually led him to Florida and Cape Kennedy where he spent time working as a payload specialist. He retired from McDonnell Douglas in 2000.
George had many interests throughout his life. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed trips in his Cessna. He was an avid golfer, tennis player and bridge player and especially loved spending summers at Linville Land Harbor. He and his wife Dorothy enjoyed traveling – especially their river cruises in Europe. George also enjoyed his daily trips to the dog park with Rufus and then Frosty.
In addition to his parents George was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy M. Thurn, half brother Robert Thurn and half sister Lorraine Brown-Davy.
George is survived by one son Mark Thurn (Andrea) of Vero Beach, FL, and daughters Julie Roberts (Jimmy) of Merritt Island, FL and Andrea Thurn (Sherry) of Newland, NC, brothers Rich Thurn of El Macero, CA and Tom Thurn of Sacramento, CA George is also survived by five grandchildren, Riley, Tawnee, Drew, Kyle, and Brent. Twelve great grandchildren also survive. He also leaves behind his cherished friend Lina Garland who was a great comfort and help to him during his time at Cranberry House.
The family would like to thank the staff of Cranberry House for the wonderful care that George received during his time there. Thanks also to the staff of Medi Home Hospice for their help and support.
