George Jimmy “Jim” Smith, of Marion, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2026 at Mission Hospital in Asheville with his family by his side after a period of declining health.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Army and was a general contractor superintendent, building many major buildings all over Western North Carolina. He retired with Beverly Grant Incorporated of Asheville. Jim attended Grace Community Church in Marion. He is now in his heavenly home rejoicing.

Born to Narl and Velora Robinson Smith, he was also preceded in death by sisters, Betty Smith Allison, Delores Ann Smith, and Margaret Jean Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Harriett Hensley Smith; his bonus children, Teresa Noblitt Proctor and husband John, Denise Noblitt Freeman and husband Jerry. Dean Blanton and wife Sharon, and Mike Blanton and wife Sharon; his brother, Narl Robert Smith; sisters, Sandra Smith Boyd and Doris Susan “Susie” Smith; and bonus grandchildren, Caleb Parker, Jeremy Freeman, and Ethan Freeman. Jim also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and four bonus great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Beam Funeral Service. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at McDowell Memorial Park.
