Elizabeth Hennessee Poteat

Elizabeth Hennessee Poteat, 80, of Marion, North Carolina, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at her residence, surrounded by her family.

She was born in McDowell County on August 13, 1941 to the late Wade Hampton Hennessee, Jr. “Bud” and Gladys Young Hennessee “Dutch.”

Elizabeth was an excellent cook and a talented musician who played the piano, organ, and dulcimer. She was an avid gardener and a lover of flowers and birds. She was involved with the Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department and often cooked for their fundraising efforts. She had a wicked sense of humor and a very distinct laugh that everyone will remember.

She was also a sports fanatic who enjoyed sports of all kinds. A staunch Democrat, she was the secretary at one time for the McDowell County Democratic Party. Mrs. Poteat was a granny to everyone, and she was certainly the best one of them all.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Neal Poteat; and one son, Mike Poteat.

Left to cherish her memories are one son, Bernard Shawn Poteat (Anne); three grandchildren, Taylor Poteat, Jake Poteat, and Kristen White; three great grandchildren, Canaan White, Carson White, and Reagan Poteat; and her beloved dogs, Heidi and Little Bit.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 04, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m.

It was a great time when I first met Lib at her mom's house on Buck Creek. Her laugh was infectious.

What an amazing mother in law I was blessed with and friend. Lib, I will miss you and all our times together. I will take care of Bernie. He loved you so even though sometimes you didn't see it. But he did. I pray you are enjoying being in Heaven now with Neal reunited and with Mike and all your other relatives and friends. You can now breathe without trouble. Please watch over us left down here. Love and miss you very much

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Elizabeth. I was in school with her for years. She was always a barrel of fun. I know you will miss her terribly. May God give you peace that only He can give. Graduation class of '59 Pleasant Gardens High School)
