Edith Marlowe Goforth

Edith Marie Marlowe Goforth, 93, of Marion, North Carolina, passed away Wednesday, July 07, 2021 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital.


She was born in Rutherford County on October 23, 1927 to the late Lawrence Marlowe and Tennie Stines Marlowe.

In addition to her parents, Edith is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Doyle Goforth who passed away in 2011; two brothers, Doug Marlowe and Jack Marlowe; two sisters, Faye Woody and Louise Haney; and two sisters-in-law, Louise Wilson and Mildred Goforth.

Edith was an active member of Glenwood Baptist Church for over 70 years. She served in numerous roles including choir member, office worker, and in several women’s groups within the church. She was the first female school bus driver in McDowell County, which she began in 1944. She went on to graduate from Mission Hospital Nursing School in 1947.

Edith will be remembered as being a people person who always had a heart for caring for others. She had many hobbies, but she mostly enjoyed spending time with family and friends and going to the McDowell County Senior Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Marie Dillingham (Clyde) of Candler; her granddaughter, Lauren Rodman of New York; two brothers, Robert Marlowe (Susan) and Frankie Marlowe (Faye); three sisters, Joyce Fare, Jane Davis, and Linda Padgett (Ronald); special aunt, Dorothy “Hig” Norton; special cousin, Dorothy Parrish; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 2:00 pm at the Glenwood Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Love officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will follow the service at the Glenwood Cemetery.
