It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of a truly extraordinary man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful friend, as well as a dedicated deacon of his beloved church, Donald Layton Poplin, Sr. Following a courageous 7 ½ year battle against multiple myeloma, his remarkable legacy of fortitude, love, and dedication will be deeply missed. As our family and friends mourn his loss, we also honor his life, finding great joy in the knowledge that his suffering has ended and he is now at peace, having returned home to be with Jesus.
Don was born July 24, 1946 in Marion to the late Layton Winford Poplin and Harriett Elizabeth Young Poplin.
A charter member of New Horizon Baptist Fellowship, Don served the Lord and his church family as a faithful deacon. He enjoyed sports of all kinds and was an avid fan of the San Francisco Giants and the UNC Tarheels. He played softball up to his forties, and he was very active in youth sporting activities most notably as a coach. He passed his love of sports off to his kids and grandkids. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army. Don was a dedicated father and grandfather who always took time to take them to numerous activities.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Peggy Causby Poplin; three children, Kenny Poplin (Siobhan), Christy Poplin Long (Jimmy), and Donnie Poplin (Jennifer); eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Keith Poplin; and special friends, Jock Wall, Dean Kanipe, and Palmer Blankenship.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 5, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at New Horizon Baptist Fellowship. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m.
