Daylen taught everyone around him what it looked like to live wide open, love deeply, work with integrity, and trust God fully. Some people spend a lifetime trying to figure out who they are, but Daylen always seemed to know. He was genuine and grounded in the kind of quiet confidence that never needed attention. What you saw was exactly who he was. He never cared much about impressing the world because he was content simply being Daylen — and the truth is, the man he naturally was became someone unforgettable.
Daylen loved home, the woods, dirtbike trails, fishing poles, motorcycles, and especially big rigs. From the time he was a little boy, you could usually find him somewhere outdoors — tearing through trails on a dirt bike, walking the woods looking for squirrels, turkey, or deer, or sitting quietly with a fishing pole in hand at his Mimi and Poppey’s pond. He carried adventure in his soul, and he marched to the beat of his own drum.
He was incredibly independent. Even though he had a dad, mom, Paw, Mawmaw, Poppey, Mimi, aunts and uncles, if Daylen wanted to learn how to do something, he would figure it out with his own two hands. He also had a special gift of knowing just who to ask if he found himself needing help.
Daylen loved being with family. He was one of the lucky ones - - having a family on his father’s side and mother’s side who wanted to be there. Weekly dinners at his grandparents’ houses were simply part of life. Holidays meant crowded tables, good food, laughter, stories, and jokes.
As he got older, Daylen became the family’s unofficial DJ during gatherings, always knowing just the right song. He also inherited his Mawmaw’s sense of humor. His jokes were never loud or attention-seeking. He would quietly slip in the perfect one-liner at exactly the right time. You had to listen closely because he would say it softly — but once it landed, laughter soon followed. He had a calm, easy spirit about him that made people feel comfortable just being near him.
In high school, Daylen found one of his greatest passions when he started working at Pittman Trucking. He absolutely loved his job. He would come home excited to talk about the trucks he was working on and, even more than that, the people he worked beside. To Daylen, work was never “just a job.”
In May of 2024, tragedy came without warning. While riding his motorcycle after school, Daylen attempted a jump he had just built. He did not clear it. His father saw him lying at the top of the hill, and within minutes the family’s whole world shifted. Fear settled over every heart with the same terrifying question: would Daylen ever walk again?
At the hospital, the pain was unbearable. When a nurse tried to place a blanket over him, he quickly asked her to take it away because even the slightest touch felt like “a thousand needles” shooting through his fingertips. His dad and one of his brothers sat nearby trying their best to hide their tears, and somehow — in true Daylen fashion — he started singing “The Monster Mash” because he was holding his hands up so nobody would touch them. Even in unimaginable pain, he still found a way to bring laughter into the room.
That night, Keaton and Morgan placed a small Jesus figure above his shoulder. At the time, none of them fully realized how much that little Jesus would come to symbolize the healing God was about to bring.
Keyven and Katy often talk about how just a few days later, as the doctor explained the surgery Daylen would need, he interrupted him and said, “Doc, my daddy is going to pray over this surgery, and I think you oughta be in here.” That was Daylen. He knew where healing truly comes from. He knew that if God was going to use a man as part of the miracle, then he needed a little dose of Jesus before stepping into the operating room.
Daylen had to learn how to feed himself again. He had to learn how to walk again. Day after day, family and friends filled that hospital room with prayers, encouragement, laughter, and love.
In just a few weeks, Daylen walked across the stage at graduation on his own two feet. He also knew where he belonged as soon as he could work again. Pittman Trucking was glad to see him back. When he was old enough to get behind the wheel - he loved logging miles, making deliveries, and helping anybody who needed him before he clocked out. Not many people get to truly love what they do, but Daylen did.
Not long after returning home, he climbed back onto his motorcycle. Keyven and Keaton tried to keep it quiet for a while, but deep down they all knew the truth — you were never going to keep Daylen away from something he loved.
God brought another sweet blessing into his life: Becky. She was the one who completed Daylen’s heart. Whenever Daylen talked about her, he would simply say, “She’s beautiful.” Anyone can see her outward beauty, but Daylen meant something more. He was talking about the kindness in her heart and the gentle spirit she carries.
After Daylen passed, one of his cousins told Becky, “I’m sorry that he is gone.” Without hesitation, she answered, “We all lost our Daylen. His parents lost a son. His brothers lost a brother. His aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends lost their Daylen. I lost him in my way.” That selfless response shows why they were the perfect match.
Later, as family and friends gathered at the house a close family friend quietly said, “I bet Vanda, Coy, and Melda looked at him the other night and said, ‘Well Daylen, you’re here early?’” What a kind thing to say to people with heavy hearts because if there is one thing everyone knows, it is how deeply this family loved and continues to love each other. We all know that Daylen entered heaven right on time.
Recently Daylen shared a post about his accident and recovery. He thanked the Lord for protecting him and for the miracle so many people had witnessed with their own eyes. Near the end of the post, he simply wrote, “To God be the Glory.”
In the days ahead there will be sorrow, anger, heartbreak, and questions that feel impossible to answer.
Daylen did not simply talk about Jesus — he lived in a way that pointed people toward Him. He loved fiercely. He served quietly. He stayed humble. He worked hard. He carried joy. He made room for others. He forgave easily. Whether he was on a trail, in a hospital bed, behind the wheel of a truck, or gathered around a crowded family table, Daylen reflected the goodness of God in the way he lived.
To God be the Glory.
