Old Fort

Cynthia Wrenn Phillips, age 70, passed away on May 24, 2025, at CarePartners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Cynthia was born in Buncombe County North Carolina on June 20,1954, to the late George William Wrenn and Carol Lee Warren Wrenn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Jefferey Phillips on February 2, 2025.

Cynthia had a deep love for music. She played the piano since she was a child and sang like an angel. Visiting friends and family could always hear music in her and Jeff’s home or on the front porch…often it would be Jeff playing the guitar or banjo and singing while Cynthia harmonized with him. Cynthia was also passionate about her “puppies”, whom she treated as family. She was a loving and tender carer of many dogs and other creatures over the course of her life.

Cynthia graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing Degree and worked for 40 years as a nurse in Oncology and Cardiology. Nursing was truly a calling to her and that was recognized when she received the prestigious DAISY award that honors nurses for their extraordinary compassion and care. She retired from the VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC after many years of federal service. After retirement from the VA, she returned to work most recently at Mountain Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Left to cherish her memory are her siblings Grover Rose Wrenn Irons, George William Wrenn (Cindy), Karen Wrenn Stewart (Jerry), Sharon Wrenn (David), Donna Jean Greenleaf (Lee), Jeanette Wrenn (Aunt), and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, and a stepson Brent Philips (Tricia). Her family would like to recognize all her friends from Mountain Ridge and Gateway Mountain who were so supportive to her and her family.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the chapel at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Asheville, NC.
