Clara Rebecca McCall

Clara Rebecca McCall was born November 22, 1939 to the late Charles Alexander McCall and Lela Marlowe McCall. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Alma Childers, her brother, Alvin McCall and nephew Charles Richard McCall “Rick”. She is survived by nephews, John Childers (Bonnie), Bill Childers (Arlene), Jeff McCall (Melanie); nieces Martha Jordan (Ben) and Nancy Jordan (Kelly). Also surviving are many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

 

Clara graduated from North Cove High School and Appalachian State University. She received a Masters Degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She taught mostly home economics during her teaching career. She began teaching at Owen High School and then transferred to North Cove in 1968. She then taught at East McDowell Jr. High from 1972 until she retired.

 

Clara was known for her volunteer work. She served as a cheerleading sponsor, Junior class sponsor, 4-H leader, Future Homemakers of America and several other clubs while she was still teaching. She volunteered for McDowell Hospice, McDowell Senior Center, Ashford/North Cove Fire Department, Ashford Community Club, Extension Homemakers, Greenlee DAR, Conley Memorial Presbyterian Church, McDowell 4-H, McDowell EMS and numerous other groups.

 

She loved to sing and was asked often to do special music for events, funeral, and church services. She was a skilled farmer and a wonderful cook. She was always caring for others. She helped take care of family members who were terminally ill. She could calm cranky babies and was known as the baby whisperer. She donated items for veterans at nursing homes and at the VA. She was always eager to do whatever she could to help others.

 

Clara can be best remembered for her faith and her generous giving heart.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at Beam Funeral Service on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 6:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 5:00 until 6:00.

 

Donations may be made to Meals on Wheels in care of McDowell County Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion, NC 28752 or Greenlee Chapter DAR at greenlee.ncdar.org.
