Cathern Vess

On the morning of Monday, February 01, 2021, Cathern Stockton Vess, age 76, of the Pleasant Gardens Community, departed to be with the Lord where she was welcomed with open arms by her two precious granddaughters, Caroline Hensley Wheeler and Megan Denise Vess.  Cathern loved nothing more than spending time with her family, and in fact, her family was there with her during her final journey.  The daughter of the late Sam and Florence Hollifield Stockton, she was born on January 10, 1945 in McDowell County, North Carolina.

A devout God-fearing wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Cathern was affectionally known to many has “Nana”.  Having been a homemaker, she loved working in her garden, canning, tending to her flowers, watching outdoor birds, but most of all, making precious memories with her family.  Although Nana will be missed by many, she will always remain in our hearts.

Left to cherish her precious memories are her loving husband of 57 years, Wayne Vess of the home; seven children, Donna Hensley (Eric) of Afton, Tennessee, Terry Vess (Dianne) of Bakersville, North Carolina, Tim Vess (Heather) of Marion, North Carolina, Josh Vess (Beth) of Marion, North Carolina, Michael Vess (Sarah) of Green Mountain, North Carolina, Randall Vess (Amber) of Marion, North Carolina and Mary Weaver (Scotty) of Marion, North Carolina; and four siblings, Jean Presnell, Jim Stockton, Linda Boone and Faye Cuthbertson.  Cathern is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and her many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, February 04, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Vess Family Cemetery next to Refuge Baptist Church on Clear Creek Road in Marion.  The family will have a gathering of family and friends on Thursday, February 04, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Refuge Baptist Church.

The family of Mrs. Vess wishes to express their deep appreciation and sincere thank you to the staff of CarePartners Hospice & Palliative Care-McDowell and to Hospice nurse, Nick Favorites for the amazing care they provided Cathern and her family during her final days.

Thank you ,Neil. Our family are tied with heartstrings and they run deep, beginning with a precious friendship between my Grandaddy Stockton and Preacher Wheeler. We hold your family dear

My best memories of this beautiful lady was when my son was born. Needless to say he didn't come with instructions, had Cathern I don't know what I would have done lol. I ran to her at least once a day, sometimes two. Her and Donna gave me the best gift for my son, I treasured it for years. It was a homemade quilt. It was absolutely beautiful, made with love and patience. Donna came to me and apologized because it had not come from a store. I told her with tears in my eyes that they couldn't not have bought me anything better. I have so many memories of the Vess family and I will treasure them as long as I live. I just saw this tonight I knew nothing about it. My heart is broken, I have no words to say how I feel. I truly loved this lady like a second Mom or something. Someday I will see her again and we will laugh about all the things we shared over those years....my prayers are with y'all....

My sincere condolences at the passing of Cathern. Wayne, would like very much to discuss family ties with you. I graduated from PG in 1955; my family lived in the Garden Creek area during that time.

To all of Cathern's family: I have many good memories of being with the Stockton Family, as Linda said it was like an extended famiy. We were very close. Cathern and I were friends and many times she invited me to go home with her for Sunday dinner. I always felt welcome and loved. It is sad to lose good friends! Catheryn was a sweet person, always the same. And to the surviving family may I say you have my sympathy and I love you all....thanks for being our friends and I hope you feel the same toward us. God bless you all. Nell and Randall Shuford.

So sorry for your loss and your sadness. Cathern was indeed a virtuous woman. The Bible says in Proverbs 31:25, 28 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.
I never spoke with Cathern that I didn't see the glow of God and witness the grace of His Spirit. Her smile was always kind and welcoming. So thankful to have known her as my friend. Praying God will fill your broken hearts with happy memories and His comfort.
