Catherine Brown Barrett, 94, died Tuesday, July 14, 2026. She was born March 6, 1932 in Huntersville, NC to Harry Leonard Brown and Irene Gilbert Brown. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Donald Barrett and by her second husband, Theophilus Walton Clapp, Jr. and also by her sister, Margaret Brown Norris.


Catherine is survived by step children T. Walton Clapp III (Betty) of Raleigh; Rebecca C. Taylor (Ray) of Spruce Pine and Anne C. Brown (William) of Nebo; Eight step grandchildren; 13 step great grandchildren and 2 step great great grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and by a special friend, Karen Holtsclaw.


Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetary Mausoleum with the Rev. Betty Connette officiating.


Catherine was raised in Huntersville, NC She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College and Gardner-Webb University where she received her Masters Degree in Elementary education. She taught elementary school for many years. Catherine loved to travel, visiting many countries. She was a member of the McDowell Chapter of the DAR. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
