Carroll "Dean" Owensby

Carroll “Dean” Owensby, 80, of Marion, North Carolina, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Atrium Health Pineville.

A native of Marion, Dean was born October 3, 1942 to the late William Ray Owensby and Margie Octavius Owensby.

Dean, who was also known by many as “Teddy Bear,” was a faithful and active member of Harvest Time Baptist Church. An avid sportsman, Dean loved hunting and fishing. He loved his family and his hunting dogs, but the Lord most of all. Dean had an appreciation for the old-fashioned ways of life that he passed down to his entire family, especially his great talent at making hog sausage. He was an excellent gardener who always shared his crop with others. Dean will be remembered as an honest man who never met a stranger.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two siblings, Billy Harold Owensby and Shelby Jean Hollifield.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Anthony Owensby; son, Darrin Owensby and his wife Barbara Ann; two grandchildren, Noelle Owensby and Linda Owensby; four siblings, Kenneth Ray Owensby, Sr., Sue Hicks, Judy Holland, and Sandy Mathis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service with Pastors Trent McKeehan and Larry Gentry officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m.

Dean and I attended Clinchfield School together. I remember him as a good friend. We would take our lunches and go across the ballfield up to the Spur Railroad Track and eat. Gene was a good friend to a young boy and a good man.

My Truest sympathy for all who knew Dean ! Because when you/ we loose a man like Dean we loose a piece of Hope , that maybe,, just maybe there's a better day coming ! Dean wasn't Fancy or Fast or Flashy or well Educated by the Lessons of society . But what Dean was ,,,, He was straight & True & sure and honest ! He was Loyal , Loving , Giving & Caring ! Dean's word was more precious than treasures. Dean Owensby was at the top of what a true Man envied to be ! He was at the top of his game , when he set out to do anything , He'd thought it thru , Pulled his old wore out boots up and came back to his family , to provide for them ,,,, Not him,,,, Them ! When he hunted ,, it was to provide, not brag ! Dean Owensby would be a great example for alot of us to strive for ! I Have no doubt , That when Dean's soul was called , He was present with Our Savior ! Dean is a big reason that we cry and mourn for loved ones called away ! Not because we cry for him , but we know our lives will be lesser because he's gone from this life ! God wouldn't have called Dean , unless he needed him , I have no doubt God is Glad he's in heaven with him . His faith has ended in sight !
