Belle Hawkes Gray

     Belle Hawkes Gray, 91, of Morganton, NC, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2022, at her daughter’s residence.

     Belle was born in Maine on February 8, 1931, to the late James Frank Hawkes and Sophronia Jeanne Perkins Hawkes. Belle was a Seventh Day Adventist who enjoyed volunteering with children. She was a loving mother who would always go out of her way to help others. She will be greatly missed.

     In addition to her parents, Belle was preceded in death by three sons, John, Jeffrey, and Chet Smith; a daughter, Joanie Alyse Rhom; and a brother, Bill Hawkes.

     She is survived by two daughters, Thelma Jean English and Faith Gardner; a son, Andy Smith; two sisters, Joyce Denton (Raymond) and Jeanne Ho (Al); a brother, Chester Hawkes (Betty Joyce); a daughter-in-law, Alice Smith; a sister-in-law, Eloise Hawkes; and numerous grandchildren.

     A memorial service will be held at a later date.
