Anita Dumas Cole, lovingly known as “Nia” to her grandchildren, passed away peacefully at her home in Nebo, North Carolina, on September 10, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John “Johnny” Morris Cole. Anita is survived by her two sons, Rodney Dumas Cole and Joseph Edward Cole with wife Meredith Cole, as well as her cherished grandchildren: Carson Cole, Heidi Cole Isley, Josie Cole Mumber, Wyatt Cole, and Elenora Cole. She also leaves behind her treasured great-granddaughter, Ada Mae Isley.
Born on January 20, 1939, to Millard and Iva Olita Dumas, Anita grew up in Avery’s Creek, North Carolina, where her family owned and operated the neighborhood grocery store. She earned her associate degree from Mars Hill College and married Johnny Cole shortly after graduating, beginning a lifelong journey of partnership, love, and dedication to family.
Anita will be remembered as a vital member of both her family and the wider community. She was a devoted member of the Masonic Order, Amaranth, and was honored with several distinguished titles, including Grand Royal Matron of North Carolina, Royal Matron of Hendersonville, and Arrowhead of Marion. At the time of her passing, she held the esteemed position of Deputy Supreme Royal Matron.
A gifted pianist, Anita shared her musical talent generously, playing for Long Shoals Baptist Church and teaching piano lessons to students in her community. In her professional life, she was a skilled accountant and a devoted mother who balanced her career with unwavering love and care for her family.
Her grandchildren fondly remember her as a source of unconditional love and boundless joy. They recall adventures to Emerald Isle and KidSenses, afternoons filled with creativity, and the special care with which she made quilts, scarves, and dolls. Anita was a master of both nurturing and making, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, wonder, and handmade treasures.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cole family Cemetery, with the Rev. Walker Toney officiating.
